The Viktualienmarkt was founded in 1807 as a simple peasant and herbs market. As the market gradually grew he was expanded during the 19. Century and given the name Viktualienmarkt. As it was modern to use latin terms during that time, Viktualien means as much as food. The square was heavily damaged during World War II so it had been considered to build expensive high-rise buildings but the city council decided to rebuild the market with considerable effort.

The Schrannenhalle - Viktualienmarkt

To the edge of the Viktualienmarkt is the Schrannenhalle. It was built in 1853 by Karl Muffat as a corn exchange. Schranne used to be the name for a grain market. The construction of metal and glass was considered a technical masterpiece at that time. Towards the end of the 19. Century the grain trade stagnated, the hall was partly dismantled. The other parts fell in 1932 because of a fire. In 2011, the hall was rebuilt and now includes retailers such as Feinkost Käfer, Jochen Schweizer and the beer hall of Hacker-Pschorr. A flagship store of Milka is in the basement.

The market is open from Monday to Saturday not longer than 8.00pm. The beer hall is closes later..
