The Castle Schwanstein was the basis of the present castle Hohenschwangau in the 12th Century and was then the seat of the noble family of Schwangau. Until the 18th Century, the castle remained largely uninhabited and building measures remained until the purchase of King Maximillian in 1832. The complete refurbishment of the castle ruins by the painter Domenico Quaglio and the transformation to the style of the Gothic Revival followed. After the completion, the royal family of Bavaria used Hohenschwangau castle as a summer residence. In addition, Ludwig II is said to have spent much of his childhood in Hohenschwangau. Today the castle is no longer in possession of the Wittelsbach family and property of the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund.
